> **NIH NIH P30** · MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA · 2021 · $115,000

## Abstract

PROJECT SUMMARY
The Hollings Cancer Center (HCC) at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) seeks renewal of its
National Cancer Institute (NCI) National Outreach Network (NON CHE) funding for an additional two years. As
in our currently funded NON CHE grant, the Specific Aims are:
Specific Aim 1. Expand, refine and evaluate the MOVENUP evidence-based, small-group, community Train the
Trainer cancer educational sessions to focus on HPV vaccination uptake in the rural I-95 Corridor of SC, in
partnership with the African Methodist Episcopal Church of SC.
Specific Aim 2. Conduct cancer clinical trial- and biospecimen collection-focused educational sessions to recruit
participants to the MUSC-HCC’s NCORP studies. (Please note that the wording of Specific Aim 2 was changed
slightly from: “Conduct cancer clinical trial- and biospecimen collection-focused educational sessions with the
patients served at the MUSC-HCC’s NCORP sites in SC.”)
Specific Aim 3. Conduct an Annual Community Compass in the SC Upstate Region.
During the current funding period (April 1, 2019 – March 31, 2021), our NON CHE program reached 342,700 SC
residents through radio/TV/public media announcements related to HPV, clinical trials, and COVID-19
information. We delivered MOVENUP sessions to 298 participants who completed 278 pre -test/post-test surveys
(92% completion rate). All 278 completed surveys were sent to the NCI for analysis. Additionally, we referred 77
participants to the NCI’s Tomosynthesis Mammographic Imaging Screening Trial (TMIST) taking place at the
NCI Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) Minority/Underserved site at the MUSC -HCC. The NON
CHE renewal grant will pave the way to future extramural funding to support the community engagement
strategies described herein. The MUSC-HCC COE, led by Dr. Ford, is strongly committed to continuing to
leverage its funding to support and sustain the ongoing activities of the CHE.
