## Abstract

Project Summary/Abstract
The UW Carbone Cancer Center (UWCCC) is the only comprehensive cancer center in Wisconsin and serves
the entire state, including 12 American Indian tribes. UWCCC’s primary clinical catchment are all counties in the
state, of which 18 are 50% or more rural. Eleven of these 18 counties have higher all-site cancer mortality rates
than the state average, and American Indians have the highest cancer incidence and mortality rates of any
population in Wisconsin. Since 2010, UWCCC has received a NON-administrative supplement to its core grant
(P30 CA014520) for a Community Health Educator (CHE). The CHE is integrated into UWCCC as staff of the
Cancer Health Disparities Initiative (CHDI), UWCCC’s flagship program to reduce disparities through research,
outreach, education, and increased access to quality care. The CHE is a critical link between UWCCC’s
outreach, education, research, and clinical programs, diverse catchment area communities, and NCI’s priorities.
In 2021-2022 the CHE, Ms. Foley Voss, will conduct culturally tailored outreach and education with rural and
American Indian communities, disseminate evidence-based cancer information, and enhance cancer health
disparities research efforts. The CHE will engage in clinical trials recruitment and education at two rural UWCCC
Oncology Outreach Clinics in collaboration with UWCCC’s Clinical Research Central Office. Most patients at the
two Outreach Clinics have ER+ breast cancer. The Faculty Director of Clinical Research Coordinating Office
(CRCO), Dr. Anne Traynor, in collaboration with her colleagues selected two ER+ trials at UWCCC that are
expected to accrue patients for ~18 months. One trial test the efficacy of a novel progesterone receptor
antagonist in the second line setting of refractory metastatic breast cancer. The other trial investigates the
accuracy of circulating tumor DNA to detect cancer relapse following prior completion of primary curative intent
treatment. The CHE will conduct Screen to Save (S2S) projects with the Oneida Nation Health Department and
Family Health La Clinica and expand education on clinical trials and S2S through CHE network of 60+ Cancer
Clear & Simple (CC&S) facilitators, and the Wisconsin Cancer Council. Evaluation of the efficacy and impact of
the clinical trials initiative will be based on NON-evaluation tools and baseline data from the two outreach clinics.
Measures will include the average number of cancer patients in each clinic, current CT enrollment rates, the
number of patients eligible for specific trials, and the number of referrals to the CHE, and other metrics.
Evaluation of the S2S initiative will be based on measures included in NCI’s S2S toolkit and each clinic’s
intervention design. Providers and administrators at participating clinics, and CRCO staff, are committed to
helping develop the evaluation. Education and outreach will be assessed based on the number of organizations
reached, trainings provided, education sessio...
