Project Summary This proposal is for a supplement to support the aims of the Populations Underrepresented in Mental illness Association Studies (PUMAS) Project, an international collaboration of investigators from the US, South America and Africa focused on large-scale psychiatric genetic research in populations of Latin-American and African descent. PUMAS aims to discover new genes for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder; it will dramatically increase the diversity of genetic discovery efforts, an important step towards reducing health disparities; and it will expand the scope of psychiatric genomics by discovering similarities and differences in genetic architecture of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder across diverse ancestries and environments. The sheer scope of the project will strain the resources of existing biosample repositories. This supplement will advance the overall project by supporting the processing at the UCLA Neuroscience Genomics Core (UNGC) biosample repository of samples from a portion of project participants (those in Coastal Colombia and Southern California). The supplement will support the UNGC in transporting samples to the repository, extracting and storing DNA, shipping DNA to the project’s genomics core, and maintaining the informatics system that will enable it to provide samples to qualified investigators.
