Abstract

Project Summary This application seeks support for the 2022 Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Oxygen Radicals: Connecting the Chemistry of Oxygen Radicals to Medicine, taking place from January 30-February 4, 2022, and preceded by the Gordon Research Seminar (GRS), organized by trainees for trainees, on January 29-30, 2022. Both GRC and GRS will be held at the Ventura Beach Marriott in Ventura, California. We designed an exciting program, bringing together leading scientists and scientists in training, representing diverse fields of research on oxygen radicals, from basic chemistry to clinical applications and trials. The program focuses on advances in the chemistry, analysis, biochemistry, and biology of oxygen radicals, covering redox signaling in cancer, aging and age-related diseases, pulmonary diseases, neurological disorders, and cardiometabolic diseases. The program includes two keynote lectures entitled The KEAP1-NRF2 regulatory system and its role in health and disease and P62-NRF2 axis in the development of obesity-induced liver cancer, together with 31 additional invited lectures, presented by senior scientists and rising stars in the area of oxygen radicals. We have reserved 12 slots for oral presentations, selected from submitted abstracts. The organizers will ensure that women and underrepresented minority scientists will actively participate in the GRC, either through selection as invited speakers or discussion leaders, through selection for speaker slots from submitted abstracts, or as presenters of posters and presenters during the poster preview sessions. The poster preview sessions will be especially important to give poster presenters a brief time to introduce the main content of their posters to the audience, preparing all attendees for further vibrant exchange and discussions during the poster sessions. Among invited speakers and discussion leaders, 46% are female, and all attendees of the GRC will have the opportunity to address challenges women face in science and issues of diversity and inclusion during the Power Hour and Representation by Women session. The GRC will create an environment of inclusion and belonging, specifically integrating minorities and scientist in training into the community, for example through welcome tables. We will ensure that during discussion sections, trainees will be given priority to ask the first questions. Invited speakers will share cutting edge science and new discoveries the following sessions: Keynote session: Integrative cellular stress responses: redox control of gene regulation; Chemistry and analysis of redox stress; Redox biochemistry of proteins; Redox signaling in cancer: from mechanisms to therapy; Redox pathways in aging and age-related diseases; Redox mechanisms in neurological diseases; Novel methods to study redox signaling; Oxidative stress in infection, immunity and pulmonary diseases; Redox signaling in cardiometabolic diseases.
