## Abstract

The ND INBRE and the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences is
proposing the purchase of a SPECTRAL LagoX instrument to provide advanced rodent imaging
technology. The UND SMHS is providing $125,000 towards the purchase price, space for
housing within the animal behavioral core facility, and technical support to ensure wide
utilization by stakeholders. The LagoX will support the research of multiple CoBRE awards, the
DaCCoTA CTR, and multiple investigator-initiated research projects. The ND INBRE research
cores are designed to provide state-of-the-art technology that cannot be sent to commercial
vendors and must be performed “in house”. These current cores include: microscopy (confocal,
fluorescence, laser capture microdisection, and stereology); flow cytometry (including cell
sorting); and, animal behavior (including optogenetic capacity). This strategy has been
developed due to the low population and large land mass of ND which limits the ability to
sustain highly expensive technology that duplicates what is available from commercial
resources. The LagoX, while supporting research within ND and surrounding areas, will also
provide training opportunities for undergraduate education prior to their entry into postgraduate
Ph.D. programs. The ability to engage undergraduates at rural primarily undergraduate
institutions and tribal colleges in the use of cutting-edge technology not available at their home
institution is a mission of the ND INBRE infrastructure program.
