Project Summary The Department of Epidemiology at the University of Florida offers NIDA Summer Scholars a challenging, yet rewarding, summer experience in the research lab of Dr. Linda Cottler. The 2021 Summer Scholars (for the internship program) will work on an ongoing NIDA research project, Identifying patterns of human polysubstance use to guide development of rodent models. This project is informed by focus groups conducted to understand temporal patterns of cocaine and alcohol/cocaine and cannabis use, which will guide development of detailed assessments exploring polysubstance use. Summer Scholars will gain experience and appreciation for the conduct of research by conducting literature reviews, participating in faculty/staff meetings, and assisting in both data collection and data analysis. Summer Scholars will learn about community outreach, including assisting with recruitment and screening of participants, and they will see firsthand the process of assessment development. The interdisciplinary nature of this study will expose Summer Scholars to a team science approach and serve as an introduction to drug abuse research.
