## Abstract

PROJECT ABSTRACT/SUMMARY
The Supplement to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research (PA-21-071) is being
requested on a R01-type behavioral research project under the funded Research
Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI-U54) at the University of Texas at El
Paso (UTEP). The current research project under the RCMI is using a
community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach to explore the
attitudes, knowledge, and perspectives surrounding the human papillomavirus
(HPV) and HPV vaccine among adults in the El Paso, TX region. However,
preliminary analysis of current project efforts have demonstrated a low and
non-representative participation from Hispanic males, requiring expertise in
men’s sexual health: Dr. Jacob Martinez (candidate). As Dr. Martinez tackles
the pertinent work surrounding men’s sexual health disparities in the El Paso-
TX context—a Hispanic-majority, medically underserved, and health
professional shortage U.S.-Mexico border community—he will receive guidance
and mentorship from a cadre of interdisciplinary disparities researchers from
Medical Anthropology, Social Work, Nursing, and Interdisciplinary Health
Sciences. The R01-type HPV behavioral research project team and Dr. Martinez
are requesting a long-term appointment on the PA-21-071 supplement as an Early
Stage Investigator underrepresented in the Nursing and Academia as a Hispanic
Male from a disadvantaged background. During the long-term candidate
appointment, Dr. Martinez will (1) enhance his research capabilities in order to
(2) achieve benchmarks of the male-specific health disparities research in the
El Paso, TX region, and (3) will disseminate findings under the guidance and
mentorship of a team of health disparities experts in order to reach research
independence and diversify the research workforce.
