Abstract

Samara Sibblies is an occupational therapy graduate student who is interested in pursuing a career in rehabilitation research. Supplemental activities will focus on Ms. Sibblies’ research and career development. These activities will occur under the mentorship of Juleen Rodakowski, OTD, MS, OTR/L, FAOTA, a successful rehabilitation science research mentor and Principal Investigator of the parent study. The research and career development aims are strongly linked with the activities in the parent grant and supported by the infrastructure and resources within Dr. Rodakowski’s Prosper in Participation research laboratory. The aims of the supplemental research project are to 1) describe types and modes of daily activities (e.g., leisure, community-based activities, and social participation) in older adults in the early stages of cognitive decline and 2) assess the relationship between the types and modes of daily activities and health outcomes in 40 participants. To accomplish this plan, Ms. Sibblies will receive training the collection of clinical research data, as well as data storage and analysis under the guidance from Dr. Rodakowski. Ms. Sibblies will obtain additional, nuanced information on daily activities and health outcomes from Dr. Rodakowski’s research participants to understand new methods of completing daily activities given the COVID-19 pandemic. Ms. Sibblies will examine whether types and modes of completing daily activities is associated with indicators of health, such as functional cognition, physical activity, and social connectedness. Ms. Sibblies will work with Dr. Rodakowski to conceptualize, write, and submit a data-based manuscript summarizing the design and results of this project for consideration in a peer-reviewed journal. In addition, Ms. Sibblies will submit her findings for consideration at an appropriate scientific meeting. The focus of Ms. Sibblies’ career development will be socialization to 1) the scientific inquiry process (conceptualization, design, implementation, analysis andinterpretation, dissemination), and 2) a scientific career in rehabilitation science. We have selected these foci inline with Ms. Sibblies’ current stage of development (graduate health professional student), to coalesce with graduate training in occupational therapy. We anticipate that at the end of this career development plan, Ms. Sibblies will have the necessary knowledge and skills to pursue the next phase of scientific training, aresearch doctorate in gerontology or rehabilitation science.
