## Abstract

2021 Vet-LIRN Grant for Paperspray Ionization Source
Project Summary:
The purpose of this application is to purchase a Verispray™ ionization source for mass
spectrometry analysis. As analytical technologies improve it is essential for labs to have new
and improved analytical equipment. Paperspray mass spectrometry (PSMS) is an
approximately 10 year old analytical technology that allows for the rapid analysis of several
types of samples in minutes. The paper spray ionization source is interfaced with the mass
spectrometer and provides an ambient ionization platform for multiple sample types and
compounds. The time-consuming chromatography step of traditional liquid chromatography
mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis is eliminated with PSMS. The total analysis time for
samples with PSMS in under 2 minutes per sample. This new analytical technology would
greatly enhance the capacity of both the ISU VDL analytical laboratory and the Vet-LIRN
network.
