## Abstract

PROJECT SUMMARY
Our primary objectives for the 3rd International Symposium to Advance Total Worker Health® are to convene
stakeholders across academia, industry, labor, and government to explore research and case studies in TWH,
to establish partnerships and collaborations that advance TWH, and to build capacity by providing the necessary
knowledge and skills to professionals, employers, workers, educators, TWH trainees, policymakers, community
groups, and students. The three and a half day Symposium will include a mix of sessions and preparatory
workshops emphasizing the latest TWH science and practice. Our goal is to support prior and current NIOSH
TWH initiatives, as well as national and global demands to protect and enhance the health of all workers. We
have three main goals:
 1. To investigate the latest, most compelling TWH research and practices that advances worker health,
safety, and well-being around the globe.
 2. To collaborate and share TWH insights with investigators and practitioners using new methods and
 transdisciplinary approaches.
 3. To apply TWH evidence to develop practical strategies to rapidly address existing and emerging issues
that enhance workplaces and workers' safety, health, and well-being.
The overall aim of the Symposium is to enhance both the work environment as well as prevention efforts that
advance worker well-being through research, education and practice. It will significantly contribute to advancing
national goals set by NIOSH to reduce injuries and illnesses. It will do this by better understanding workplace
interventions, research methodologies, and applied TWH practices. The planning committee aims to include a
strong research to practice (r2p) emphasis, as well as the advancement of a TWH research agenda, that aligns
with the NIOSH National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) goals, in particular those cross-sector goals
relevant to the NIOSH FY2019-2023 strategic plan. The most relevant strategic goals and NORA cross sectors
are: 1) Healthy Work Design and Well-Being and 2) Cancer, Reproductive, Cardiovascular and Other Chronic
Disease Prevention. Based on the research being conducted in the field of TWH and the relevance of TWH
practice across all industries, we expect the conference to be relevant to all sectors and cross sectors.
Short term outcomes will include assessment of attendee demographics, general satisfaction with the
Symposium, including the quality and relevance of sessions and perceived changes in knowledge and abilities
because of attending the conference. Intermediate outcomes will include increased engagement and new
collaborations that develop because of attending the conference. The key long-term outcome is to increase the
capacity and collaboration of researchers and practitioners focused on TWH studies and interventions to improve
the effectiveness and sustainability of TWH implementation.
