## Abstract

PROJECT SUMMARY
The overall goal of the NYU Cancer Health Disparity (CHD) SPORE Developmental Research Program (DRP)
is to stimulate novel translational research to reduce orodigestive (ODT) cancer disparities among minority and
low-income populations. The aims of the NYU CHD SPORE DRP are to: 1) provide funds for promising research
in cancer health disparities in orodigestive cancers as it relates to the interplay of the microbiome and immune
response; 2) seek to support the development of “high-risk, high-reward” investigations in ODT cancers; 3) attract
investigators with novel approaches to solving issues that contribute to cancer health disparity in orodigestive
cancers; and 4) monitor the progress of developmental research projects. This program will promote the
exploration of innovative ideas in translational ODT cancer disparities research by funding pilot projects proposed
by investigators at the Assistant Professor level or higher. The DRP will provide guidance, advice, evaluation,
and funding for 5–7 pilot projects. Specifically, the DRP will support at least 2 pilot projects per year, each for a
12-month period, with the option of a competitive renewal for another 12 months. The goal for each pilot project
is to generate sufficient high-quality data to advance investigation of ODT cancers to the extent that it will enable
submission of a compelling independent project to the NIH or other federal agency for funding. We will encourage
DRP projects that link to an ongoing NYU CHD SPORE project. The co-Directors of the DRP are Dr. George
Miller and Dr. Chau Trinh-Shevrin. Dr. Miller is Professor of Surgery and Cell Biology and leader of the Perlmutter
Comprehensive Cancer Center (PCC) Tumor Immunology Program. Dr. Chau Trinh-Shevrin is Associate
Professor of Population Health and Associate Director for Community Outreach and Engagement in the PCC.
