Abstract

NIDDK epidemiology contracts provide a compendium of vital information on the burden, characteristics and prognosis of diseases of interest to the various divisions. In order to provide meaningful information to stakeholders, a variety of data sources are required. These include various NCHS sources including NHANES, a nationally representative survey conducted by NCHS; CMS data obtained directly from CMS, which demographically represents an older, more likely retired, and disproportionately minority population. More recently, private insurance data, such as Optum Insight, which provides information on a younger, more likely employed population, and thus complementary and providing a more fully representative population than CMS data alone, has been obtained. In the most recent iteration of the contact last year, various members of the acquisition planning team recommended acquisition of Optum data be shared among various divisions, and potentially even other IC’s, as an efficient and cost saving strategy. Optum Insight is a company of United Health Group. It provides an integrated enrollment, medical and prescription claims data augmented with laboratory test results data. It only members with both medical and pharmacy benefits. Includes UHC fully insured, Medicaid, and legacy Medicare Choice membership and claims. Blinded data to protect patient privacy, yet supports patient-linked longitudinal analysis. CDM Statistics May 2000 through June 2012 (10+ years of history) 61 million membership records 50 million unique members Roughly 14 million covered lives per year
