Abstract: INNOVATOR SUBPROJECT CORE The Innovator Subprojects Core will manage and support subprojects using CIMIT’s established innovation model to maximize the likelihood of subprojects reaching the technological stage of human-grade prototypes. A key learning from CIMIT’s work as the Point-of-Care Technology Research Center in Primary Care was that a team of experienced, successful healthcare innovators can accelerate innovators toward commercialization of their projects. The Innovator Subprojects Core will leverage all the resources and capabilities from previous CIMIT programs to accelerate innovator subprojects to the stage of human-grade prototypes and prepare the subproject teams to successfully “graduate” from CINTA to other funding sources. CINTA is designed to de- risk and accelerate subprojects that could significantly impact unmet needs in the diagnosis or treatment of disorders of the nervous system. The specific goal is to achieve a design-locked human-grade prototype with up to 4 years of CINTA support and for the subproject team to execute on a workplan, developed by the applicant and a Mentor Team, to transition out of the hub and secure further investment or enter into one of the Blueprint companion programs. The subproject-centric support of each funded subproject will be managed by two groups under the direction of the Innovator Subprojects Core lead: Mentor Teams and the Clinical Review Committee. The Mentor Team provides day-to-day facilitation of funded subprojects and for each subproject consists of individuals that conducted the original Deep Dive through the Evaluation Core. The Mentor Team will recommend to the Administrative Core when significant changes to a subproject are needed or if a subproject should be terminated. The Innovator Subprojects Core is specifically responsible for driving subprojects to successful exits from CINTA. Mentor Team members are “in the trenches” with subproject innovators, troubleshooting and solving problems as they arise. The Clinical Review Committee consists of clinicians and patients/family members with experience in treating, diagnosing, or living with nervous system disorders who review subprojects after they enter the Core and periodically as the prototype is designed and de-risked to provide feedback to Mentor Teams on the suitability of the technology for the intended end user. Subprojects will exit CINTA with a comprehensive plan for continued development and commercialization. The Administrative Core will track the impact of the Innovator Subprojects Core with metrics that will be made available to NIH and which will facilitate continual improvements in CINTA operations and subproject facilitation. Based on the response to the solicitation for the Blueprint MedTech Pilot Program, we anticipate funding 15 subprojects from the first solicitation.
