Abstract

Abstract This proposal requests partial support for a new conference entitled “Stressed or Stressed Out: The Conference on Mechanisms of Allostasis,” a Summer Research Conference (SRC) to be held at the Astor Crown Plaza, New Orleans Louisiana, September 18 - 21, 2022. The goal of this conference is to bring together expert researchers at all career stages to advance our knowledge of how allostatic load affects communication networks and signaling pathways linking organ systems to affect various physiologic functions and disease states. The specific aims of this meeting will be to convene approximately 150 researchers to discuss the latest science related to stress and the fundamental mechanisms of allostasis; facilitate interdisciplinary exchanges among experts in the fields of stress biology, neuroendocrinology, and related disciplines; support the participation of a diverse group of trainee and junior scientists; and deliver educational experiences for trainees that leverage the resources and expertise of the Endocrine Society and the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB). The meeting program will include 5 sessions with speakers discussing novel nodes of stress-reproductive neuroendocrine communication; stress and the gut microbiome- brain axis; stress and mitochondria; programming of homeostatic mechanisms during brain development; and central circuits controlling the autonomic nervous system and homeostasis. A 6th session will feature short talks from graduate students and postdocs selected from submitted abstracts. Three poster sessions will provide all participants with opportunities to present their work. Additional educational content for graduate students and postdocs will be provided through small-group discussion sessions during lunch. This new meeting will enable an exploration of allostatic load in a focused way and with attention to the underlying mechanistic details foundational to neurobiological, behavioral, and/or psychopathological responses to adverse stressors.
