# Promoting Research Training During Psychiatry Residency

> **NIH NIH R25** · BROWN UNIVERSITY · 2022 · $16,200

## Abstract

There is a pressing need for institutions to diversify their student body and faculty in
order to increase participation of individuals currently underrepresented in the
biomedical, clinical, behavioral, and social sciences. This supplement provides a
summer research fellowship for two medical students from underrepresented minority
groups to engage in intensive 8-week summer projects in psychiatric research. The
program provides research mentorship in novel and important domains of research, a
comprehensive didactic program, and career development mentorship from leaders in
our department. The program will have the following components: 1) A mentored
research training experience with a clinical or translational focus in a highly successful
research program, 2) A formal research-focused didactic curriculum: students will
participate in a summer research didactic program for medical students, and 3) Career
development mentoring including professional development skills and research-focused
career guidance from research mentors, the R25 director, the residency Program
Director, and the Chair of Psychiatry and Human Behavior. Students will be expected to
prepare and present a poster presentation of the research project and findings. And are
encouraged to collaborate with their summer research mentor on other products such as
manuscripts and presentations.
