## Abstract

PROJECT SUMMARY
The focus of this project is to identify “Mental Health” issues in mothers of children with CL/P in
the presence of incidental findings from whole genome sequencing (WGS) of cleft triads
supported by R01 DE028300. WGS provides an opportunity for the identification of “incidental
findings” that indicate an increased risk for traits like sickle cell anemia and other single gene
disorders that may have immediate medical implications for those in the study or their family
members. We plan to determine the mental health experiences and quality of life in mother and
child dyads with cleft abnormalities and to evaluate levels of behavioral difficulty in children with
an orofacial cleft and relationship with quality of life and the mental health difficulty in their
mothers in the presence of incidental findings. This is both a bioethics research study and
capacity building opportunity in bioethics. This study will be led by Dr. Butali at the University of
Iowa in collaboration with Dr. Yewande Oshodi and Dr. Adeyemo at the University of Lagos.
