## Abstract

ALASKA DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION
PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT
The proposed compliance and enforcement expansion project is intended to facilitate
improvements to Alaska’s manufactured food regulatory program framework and
capacity to respond quickly and appropriately to confirmed and potentially actionable
samples collected as a part of the Laboratory Flexible Funding Model (LFFM)
cooperative agreement. This project will meet the objectives of the funding opportunity
to enhance integration between AFSS and Alaska’s Environmental Health Laboratory
(EHL) and to advance the efforts for a nationally Integrated Food Safety System (IFSS)
and mutual reliance between state manufactured food programs and FDA.
To accomplish these goals, we will use the lessons learned during the first two years of
the LFFM, and the experiences shared by other states, to make improvements to
sampling training plans and written sample collection procedures, data management
(especially for retail-collected samples from non-Alaska manufacturers), and
compliance and enforcement procedures for when exceedances are detected by in-
state and out-of-state laboratories in products manufactured under Alaska jurisdiction.
Systems developed under the manufactured food regulatory program standards
(MFRPS) framework will facilitate integration of new and improved processes into the
existing structure of the manufactured food program and assure sustainability of
capabilities as well as enhancing collaboration between the program, the lab and the
FDA.
