Diversity Supplement: Personalized screening for lung cancer: the importance of co-existing chronic conditions to clinical practice and policy

Abstract

PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT This application seeks to support Caretia Washington, MD/PhD student, with a diversity supplement. Ms. Washington is an African-American, U.S. citizen who is currently in a PhD program in Public Health at the University of Florida, Gainesville. This supplement will support mentoring and supervised research experience that will help her to become an independent investigator. Ms. Washington’s mentor will be Dejana Braithwaite, PhD, MSc. In this diversity supplement, we propose to identify a retrospective cohort of stage I/II NSCLC patients (n=2,000) in OneFlorida to provide the first detailed assessment of imaging surveillance utilization and survival by levels of comorbidity and functional status as well as the first assessment of the impact of baseline levels and changes in comorbidity and functional status on patient outcomes. Completion of this project will inform future analysis of lung cancer disparities in the PLuS cohort. As the diversity supplement candidate, Ms. Washington, will gain essential experience in epidemiology and cancer disparities as well as statistical methods used to evaluate the multi-level causes of these disparities. Over a two-year period, Ms. Washington will engage in a training plan to focus on the following objectives: 1) training in epidemiology methods, 2) training in quantitative skills and statistical methods, and 3) professional development via grant and manuscript writing. The knowledge, skills, and experience that I will gain by completing this training and research plan will make me a competitive applicant for future career development awards such as F31, which is her next step in becoming an independent health disparities researcher.
