## Abstract

Abstract
This is a supplement bridge year funding application for the Hopkins Center for Health Disparities
Solutions (HCHDS) in response to PA-MD-20-272. The HCHDS was funded under the RFA-MD-17-005,
“NIMHD Comprehensive Centers of Excellence (U54).” The HCHDS was established in 2002 with funding
from the NCMHD-EXPORT Center program and renewed under the COE program in 2006, 2011 and 2016.
Our primary objective is to be a national resource for advancing the science of health equity and identifying
and promulgating solutions for reducing and eliminating health disparities. Based in the Department of Health
Policy and Management in the Bloomberg School of Public Health, we promote and encourage health
disparities research, training and community engagement using the resources of the Johns Hopkins Schools of
Public Health, Medicine and Nursing.
Over the next five years we propose to conduct three major research projects (1) The Why Place
Matter Project (2) The Black Men’s Health Project, and (3) The Mid-Life Black Women’s Blood Pressure Study,
The cross-cutting theme for these projects is “exploring and addressing the impact of place in health disparities
in African American adults with chronic conditions.” We define place broadly as the physical/built environment,
sociocultural environment and the healthcare system. Our research primarily focuses on interpersonal and
community level influences. The Center will have three Cores, Administrative, Investigator Development and
Community Engagement and Dissemination. The primary functions of these cores are to manage the research
projects, facilitate the development of early career JHU investigators, and aid center researchers in engaging
the community and translating and disseminating their research findings to policymakers and other
stakeholders.
