## Abstract

PROJECT ABSTRACT
The overarching goal of our proposed IMSD at UC Davis Training Program is to increase the
diversity of the biomedical research workforce by increasing the number of diverse students that
complete PhDs in biomedical-related science fields. For this supplement, we propose to build our
second primary objective of the funded IMSD Program to enhance the mentor-mentee
relationship. We propose developing and implementing a superior tool called the Individual
Mentoring Development Plan (IMDP) for a more comprehensive mentoring relationship
between graduate students and mentors. The IMDP is an integration of three independently
powerful tools for enhancing the mentoring relationship: the Individual Development Plan (IDP),
the Mentoring Compact (MC), and the Mentoring Map (MM). The objectives of the supplement
are 1) Create an Individual Mentoring Development Plan (IMDP) that enhances the mentor-
mentee relationship. 2) Create a webinar for faculty and students about mentoring mapping (using
mind mapping). 3) Create a webinar for faculty and students about the IMDP. All webinars will be
published and posted on the University of California (UC) Davis IMSD website and YouTube so
everyone can benefit. 4) Present the results at ABRCMS or SACNAS and publish the results of
students' perceptions and perceived benefits of the IMDP in a blog, at ABRCMS or SACNAS, on
the IMSD website, and in a peer-reviewed publication. We will utilize program evaluations by
mentors and mentees to continuously improve the IMDP and provide prompt dissemination of the
supplemental results. We anticipate that carefully developing and using an IMDP will produce
more productive underrepresented (UR), economically disadvantaged, and disabled graduate
students with better mentee-mentor relationships.
