## Abstract

SUMMARY
This is an application for an Administrative Supplement to R25MH081482 (Interdisciplinary Research Fellowship
in NeuroAIDS, IRFN) in response to NOT-OD-22-057: Administrative Supplements to Recognize Excellence in
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Mentorship. Research shows that effective mentorship is
critical for achieving success in the biomedical sciences, and this especially important for early career scientists
from underrepresented backgrounds. The IRFN has been successful in attracting a diverse group of early career
scientists from, with a third of participants being from underrepresented ethnic/racial groups, and half being
women. The PD herself has a strong record of research mentorship, with half of her mentees belonging to
ethnic/racial groups underrepresented in science, as well as two-thirds being women. A majority of her mentees
remain in patient-oriented research. The PD has received formal evidence-based training in mentorship skills
and delivers trainings at her institution. This Administrative Supplement will allow for the adaptation and
deployment of a full mentorship training program for HIV researchers at her institution, across the spectrum of
academic development: senior/mid-career, early career, and trainees entering mentored research. The
effectiveness of the program in improving knowledge about mentorship skills will be evaluated. A successful
program will expand the reach of the parent grant by improving mentoring experiences for both mentors and
mentees in HIV research, which is expected to have long-lasting benefits for the pipeline of new scientists
working on problems related to HIV.
