## Abstract

Project Summary/Abstract
This project will create a longitudinally consistent database of information on occupations in the Health and
Retirement Study (HRS). Occupational information in the HRS has been coded using three different Census
occupational coding schemes, with 2010 the most recent. We propose to use information provided by
respondents, in interviews in 2004 and earlier, to recode all occupations into the 2010 Census framework. To
maximize efficiency we will first utilize automated tools including crosswalks and the National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Industry & Occupation Computerized Coding System (NIOCCS) and
then use experts on occupational coding to hand code more complex cases. We will link this dataset to rich
data on job characteristics from the Occupational Information Network (O*NET) and the Dictionary of
Occupational Titles (DOT).
The availability of consistent occupation and industry codes for all or much of the lifetime careers of HRS
respondents linked to O*NET and DOT would create opportunities for researchers to address many important
research questions concerning the determinants and consequences of the United States (US) occupational
structure. This may be especially useful for studying work-related risk factors for Alzheimer’s Disease and
Alzheimer’s Related Dementias (ADRD), racial and ethnic disparities in ADRD rooted in racial and ethnic
differences in occupation, and the effects of differences in the cognitive and physical demands of work on the
economic security and physical and brain health of workers as they enter retirement.
The resulting data and relevant documentation will be disseminated through the HRS website as a
restricted data product available in the MiCDA data enclave. We will hold and record a webinar and conduct a
preconference workshop (if accepted) to provide training to the research community on the use of this new
data resource. We will participate in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to be held in Bethesda, Maryland in
Summer 2023 to share our results.
