## Abstract

Abstract
The goal of this research diversity supplement is to enhance the impact of the parent R21/R33 by providing an
early research apprentice training opportunity to a highly motivated undergraduate student, Dabne Herrera
Guerra. The supplement will help her transition from a two-year community college to a four-year university and
provide a research foundation for her anticipated biomedical science graduate training. Overall, the research
supplement is designed to provide the candidate with critical experience in (1) clinical and neuroscience
knowledge of brain aging and dementia; (2) clinical and neuroscience knowledge of cognitive training to address
brain plasticity; and (3) data collection experience in assessing cognitive capacity and conducting cognitive
training interventions among older adults at risk for dementia. Due to the nature of an R21/R33, we will divide
the training into two phases. In alignment with the R21 stage of the parent study, the current supplement will be
the 1st phase (12/2022-08/2023), focusing on gaining knowledge and hands-on experience of brain aging and
dementia. Upon the awarding R33 of the parent study, we will submit the 2nd phase of the supplement (plan for
09/2023-11/2024), focusing on knowledge and hands-on experience of cognitive training and brain plasticity.
The anticipated outcome of the 1st phase will be a brief topical review on differentiating brain aging within
chronological vs. biological frameworks. In addition, the candidate will provide the parent study with knowledge
and personal experience in working with Spanish-speaking older adults and help translate the cognitive training
package developed in the parent study into a Spanish version.
