## Abstract

The overall goal of the dbGaP FHIR API project is to create an environment where research data is interoperable, and researchers can find and analyze variables of a given kind across studies. Over the past two years, a joint effort between LHNCBC and NCBI has created a FHIR research database to provide open and authorized access to >1 billion dbGaP observations. Our team has gotten a better understanding of how observations are represented in dbGaP and developed strategies to fix many of the irregularities. Funding will support the continued development of the dbGaP FHIR API, efforts to improve access, and continued performance improvements to ease usability of searching the database. Funding support will also further develop the Research Data Finder to aid discovery in, and across, dbGaP studies. NLM will continue to engage with customers and stakeholders throughout project development.
