Project Summary: Consistent with NIOSH’s overall mission and strategic objectives including the impact of working conditions on health and well-being, and transferring knowledge into practice, the 15th International Work, Stress, & Health Conference, on November 8 to 11th, 2023 in Miami, Florida is designed to address the constantly changing nature of work and the implications of these changes for the health, safety, and well-being of workers. Conference programming will focus on mental health and the challenges and solutions to consider to further advance our understanding of mental health well-being. Included in the programming will be an innovative prioritization of diversity, equity, and inclusion in order to promote best practices for all people, including those who have been historically underrepresented. The need to continue to address mental well-being in the workplace was highlighted in a report from U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy that included recommendations, guided by findings from psychological science. With mental health conditions on the rise, it has been said that the world is facing a mental health epidemic. Consequently, this conference will give special attention to solutions for building and sustaining the psychological health of workers. Work stress is a major risk factor for both mental and physical health consequences. By contrast, healthy work reduces health risks and meets employees’ basic income needs, and also provides positive opportunities that can foster mental well-being. The latest research findings, presented by leading experts and practitioners in the field will provide an exciting forum through which to learn and exchange findings and ideas on the latest developments. Dr. Beth M. Schwartz, Associate Director of the Office of Applied Psychology of the American Psychological Association (APA), will be serving as the Project Director for this grant submission.
