# Acquisition of Laser Ablation and DNA/RNA Sample Prep Systems

> **NIH NIH P20** · UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA FAIRBANKS · 2023 · $242,207

## Abstract

Project Summary:
This proposal seeks to acquire a new NWR213 laser ablation (LA) system, cryostat, and an automated sample
purification system, which will provide a new set of abilities at University of Alaska analytical chemistry and
genomics core facilities. These systems will provide accessibility to student researchers and the Alaska INBRE
network user base in support of INBRE’s mission (P20GM103395). The laser ablation system and cryostat will
allow for elemental analysis of tissues and solid samples, while the KingFisher system will allow for automated
extraction and purification of DNA/RNA from biological specimens. The University of Alaska Anchorage is a
primarily undergraduate-serving institution (PUI), while UA Fairbanks is a Ph.D-granting Carnegie R2
institution; both place high emphasis on undergraduate and graduate student research and providing in-
network options for analytical data collection. By acquiring these systems, the University of Alaska will enhance
user access to new technology, prevent interruption of current workflows, and significantly upscale the
throughput capacities of the core facilities while decreasing the potential for operator error. These systems are
focused on higher-throughput and/or low error applications.
