## Abstract

Project summary/abstract
Supplemental funding is requested for the purchase of an automated flash chromatography
system. This automated system will greatly facilitate and accelerate the chemical synthesis of
model compounds to develop fundamental principles of proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET)
and the recently discovered proton-coupled energy transfer (PCEnT) process (reported summer
2022). The synthesis of new pure compounds for study is often the slow step in this research.
The requested system is comprised of high-pressure pumps, pre-packed columns of various sizes
and stationary phases, and a photodiode array detector for fractionation. This system fully
automates and improves the traditional time-intensive and labor-intensive column
chromatography for separation of the products of chemical reactions. This system will enable the
rapid and efficient purification of both the desired compounds for study and the synthetic
intermediates along the pathway to the final products. Therefore, the automated flash
chromatography system will accelerate the planned research and allow extensions to wider
groups of compounds and to new model systems. More ready availability of compounds to study
are particularly important in the growing collaborative efforts, in which our laboratory has been
the generator and synthesizer of new molecules. In particular, the team’s discovery of PCEnT
brings new challenges to synthesize molecules that will proceed by this pathway or by PCET.
