## Abstract

ABSTRACT
Data science has the potential to expand and enhance research by discovering new biomedical insights
by mining and interpreting vast amounts of biological data. However, there is a need to enhance institutional
data science capacity by growing human capital, developing or expanding data science infrastructure, and
building data science partnerships. The objectives for this supplement synergize with the objectives of the
Arkansas INBRE (P20GM103429), which is built around collaborative, mentored research projects that are
supported by core resources to obtain the following objectives: 1. develop human capital, 2. promote
communication about and access to INBRE resources, 3. foster statewide cooperation, 4. provide education
and training, and 5. encourage collaborations outside of Arkansas. The network consists of two lead
institutions (UAMS and UAF) with well-established computational resources and trained staff; however, there
are 17 primary undergraduate institutions (PUIs) across the state which lack the necessary skills or
computational resources to provide data science opportunities to faculty and students. The goal of this
supplement is to enhance the computational infrastructure to provide both training, education, and
computational hardware and software to PUIs across the state. In so doing, we will grow human capital with
data science knowledge, skills, and resources to perform biomedical research in academia and industry.
Additionally, the provided resources from this proposal will expand the current Bioinformatics core into a Data
Science core. We will use the following Specific Aims to accomplish our goal: 1) Expand training workshops to
include data science, 2) develop CRE modules on data science for the classroom at PUIs, and 3) expand
statewide data science by providing access to publicly available data and computational resources at PUIs.
