Abstract

PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT Collaborative biomedical research training is needed in the Southern African region to raise up and equip a diverse yet inclusive scientific research corps in HIV hematological malignancy, with focus on HIV lymphoma research. The Hematology Division at the University of Cape Town (UCT) holds an existing D43 Fogarty grant focused on HIV-related Transfusion Medicine and Hematology together with the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and is applying for this supplement opportunity. UCT has been building research collaborations in the field of HIV-related hematological malignancy with two historically disadvantaged institutions (HDI) - the University of the Free State (UFS) and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). There is a critical need for young African leaders to be trained and capacitated in an integrated and collaborative research setting. We have identified six Masters students and four PhD graduates from the three institutions, all from underrepresented groups, who will be supported with specific training and mentored research. The proposed program is closely aligned with the scope of the parent award and will focus on clinical research methods workshops, laboratory skills and methods workshops, data analysis, data registries and specimen repositories. For this supplement, we propose the following specific aims which support the aims of our parent grant: 1) The continued establishment of UCT as a South African center of excellence in HIV hematology research by reaching out to HDIs and by addressing inequities in research opportunity. 2) To establish a three-way collaborative biomedical research training network with CPUT and UFS to train the next generation of clinical researchers in HIV hematological malignancies and lymphoma, to become independent researchers who will address emerging health challenges in the regions they serve. This supplement grant will expand the research training network between UCT, UFS and CPUT. Additionally, it offers an opportunity for us to train underrepresented scientists from HDIs and strengthen biomedical training in HIV hematology in South Africa
