Abstract

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI)’s Office of Translational Alliances and Coordination (OTAC) is charged with accelerating the translation of basic discoveries and innovations into new diagnostics, devices, and therapeutics, through the development and management of innovative programs and initiatives. OTAC’s work supports the NHLBI Strategic Vision to advance translational research and develop a diverse and skilled scientific workforce. OTAC focuses on catalyzing and facilitating development of emerging technologies towards commercial potential through its stewardship of resources within the small business innovation ecosystem, including Proof of Concept and Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs, in addition to innovator support services. Evaluation of our programs and services generates data-based evidence that is key to informing programmatic and operational decisions. NHLBI OTAC supports academic and small business innovation, and works with internal and external stakeholders to provide funding and educational support to the small business innovation ecosystem to impact health. RTI will identify appropriate data elements, create environments to collect and house data, and provide analysis and visualization tools that allow for ongoing evaluation of the SBIR/STTR ecosystem.
