## Abstract

FY24 FACILITIES TO C - 126610 B555 CHILLER VFD INSTALL
The purpose of this project is to install a new VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) at the existing chiller serving building 555 which will enable the building to utilize the chiller all year around. The increase in equipment heat loads in many labs causes the need for supplemental cooling. However chilled water cannot be used for supplemental cooling since it becomes unavailable when outside temperatures drop below 50 degrees.
The original design proposed installing a heat exchanger to accommodate using the chiller throughout the year. However, after submitting and approving the conceptual design, it was agreed with the NCI that installing the VFD in lieu of the heat exchanger will
achieve the same results, and the VFD will provide more energy cost savings, and less maintenance in the long run as the costs of operating the VFD should be lower than those of the heat
exchanger.
