PROJECT SUMMARY (Research Experience and Training Coordination Core: Maier, Ramírez- Andreotta, Ding) The overarching goal of the University of Arizona Superfund Research Center (UA SRC) is to improve human health impacted by mining activities. This requires understanding of how chronic exposure to dust generated by metal-mining activities contributes to the development of nonmalignant lung disease combined with the development of risk assessment tools to predict exposures and associated health outcomes and inform public health prevention and interventions. Achieving this goal requires the development of transdisciplinary, research-based, paradigm-shifting solutions to the multifactorial problems associated with the increased demand for metals. The UA SRC Research Experience and Training Coordination Core (RETCC) supports development of such solutions by preparing interdisciplinary graduates who are equipped to address and mitigate complex 21st century hazardous waste challenges. The success of the UA SRC Trainee experience is evidenced by the number of awards they receive and by their successful placement upon graduation into sought after academic, regulatory, and industry positions. We will continue this success by investing in and designing novel pedagogical experiences to ensure students are exposed to transdisciplinarity, collaboration, knowledge integration, and stakeholder engagement. Our RETCC will surpass conventional approaches to graduate student training by immediately immersing Trainees in community engagement (CE), research translation (RT) and data management and analysis (DMA) activities, and emphasizing and developing a wide variety of science communication skills. We will continue to build on the successful approach developed over the past 34 years to guide our RETCC, which includes: (1) Career enhancement stipends, (2) Intensive and extensive training opportunities in UA SRC projects and cores, (3) exposure to multiple scientifi
