## Abstract

PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT
ALTERATIONS AND RENOVATIONS
SD BRIN has five predominantly undergraduate institutional (PUI) partners with various levels of
research cultures on their campuses. SD BRIN has initiated the campus research cultures and continues
to maintain and strengthen biomedical research projects for both the PUI faculty and their students.
Many partners offer undergraduate research experiences during the academic year as part of course
work or independently and all offer the SD BRIN summer undergraduate fellows program for exposing
students to cutting-edge research. The Alterations and Renovations funds offered with every phase of
INBRE have been used by the PUI partners to remodel and improve their research spaces. SD BRIN
routinely offers the partners the opportunity to apply for $125,000 for upcoming A&R needs. During the
first phase, Black Hills State University used the money for remodeling to move the core facility into a
new building while Mt. Marty College used the money to convert old library spaces into science
laboratories with enhanced electrical power. During the second phase, Augustana used the money to
improve the animal facilities and other shared equipment spaces in the large addition to the science
building that they were building, while University of Sioux Falls used the money for remodeling
laboratory spaces for safety in their new science building. During this phase, Mt. Marty is planning to
convert two classrooms into dedicated office and laboratory spaces for the new exercise physiology and
nursing research laboratories. Dakota Wesleyan University is launching a new building to house a new
School of Innovation and Leadership and will use the money to convert one of the spaces into an
Innovation Lab for the sciences to be used for independent student research projects. Since A&R is hard
to come by for any institution, SD BRIN has tried to be fair by sharing the funds among the partner
institutions as needed.
