Abstract

Project Summary – Alteration and Renovation SC INBRE IV proposes alterations and renovations of animal facilities and underutilized teaching/storage space at five PUIs. Two of these institutions are continuing network members (Presbyterian College and USC Aiken; both were new in SC INBRE III), two were outreach institutions in SC INBRE III that will become network members in SC INBRE IV (Benedict College and Converse College), and one (USC Upstate) is a new network member institution for SC INBRE IV. The following alterations and renovations at these institutions are proposed: Benedict College - Renovation of the wash/autoclave room (serving the laboratories and animal facility) that will be used by SC INBRE faculty and students. Requested renovations including the replacement of ceiling and floors, the installation of new electrical and vent work, and the purchase and installation of a new medium- sized autoclave. Converse College - Alterations and renovations of the animal facility in Kuhn Hall to increase the research capacity in support of the Converser SC INBRE research program. This A&R project includes the purchase and installation of two commercial dishwashers, non-absorbent cabinetry, and a Phantom changing station, to bring the animal facility to state-of-the-art and increase its functionality and capacity. Presbyterian College – Renovation of storage space in the Biology Department to support the installation and outfitting of a new cold room to support the research activities of faculty and students participating in PC’s SC INBRE program. University of South Carolina Aiken - Renovation of existing teaching laboratory space to convert this space into state-of-the-art research laboratory space and increase the research and student training capacity in USC Aiken’s SC INBRE program. University of South Carolina Upstate - Renovation of a former chemical stockroom converting it into new research laboratory space at the University of South Carolina Upstate, significantly increasing the research space available for SC INRBE faculty and students.
