# Targeted Infusion Project: Enhancing Data Analysis Capabilities at Claflin University by Strengthening Data Science Education and Research

## Abstract

The Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP) through Targeted Infusion Projects supports the development, implementation, and study of evidence-based, innovative models and approaches for improving the preparation and success of undergraduate students enrolled at HBCUs so that they may pursue science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) graduate programs and/or careers. This project contributes to HBCU-UP program goals by addressing the national need to enhance data science education and research capacity. With the goals of improving student outcomes in core data science courses and expanding undergraduate research opportunities, this project is implementing a hybrid supplemental instruction model and faculty-mentored summer research experiences at Claflin University. This work contributes to national priorities in education by enhancing supportive learning environments for undergraduate STEM students and integrating applied data science across STEM disciplines. Expected outcomes include improved academic achievement, retention, and preparation for careers and advanced study in STEM fields.

The project uses an integrated approach to data science education and research training by developing and implementing a hybrid supplemental instruction model for core data science courses.
