Abstract
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is amending its food labeling regulations to make dietary supplements of vitamins, minerals, herbs, or other similar nutritional substances (dietary supplements) subject to the same general requirements that apply to all other types of food with respect to the use of health claims that characterize the relationship of a substance to a disease or health-related condition on the label or in labeling and the content of petitions for obtaining authorization for such health claims. This action is being taken in response to provisions of the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990 (the 1990 amendments) and the Dietary Supplement Act of 1992 (the DS act) that bear on health claims.
