Smouldering coal by the shovel flared up and increased rapidly. When it was apparent that it could not be exinguished in under 30 minutes, MSHA was notified. Mine and MSHA personnel agreed on a plan and the fire was extinguished. Very hot, dry weather that had prevailed for 4 days contributed to the flare-up. No injuries and no damage resulted from the fire.
