Contractor Van Damme Farming not involved in normal mining operations was delivering hay at Empire tailings basin. When unloading hay the contractor employee noticed a fire starting near the driver's side door of the truck. His supervisor called 911 at 4:58 pm. Fire depart's arrived at 5:19 pm, put down the initial fire, stayed past midnight to ensure smoldering was out.
