A grass fire was discovered at 4:10 pm. The fire was south of the mines Mid Pit. No structures, personnel or active mining areas were threatened by the fire. A strong wind from north to south kept the fire from being extinguished within 30 minutes, so at 4:40 pm the fire was reported to MSHA. The flames were extinguished at 5:56 pm.
