Employee was improperly using a 4-1/2"" grinder (whereby the guard thus became ineffective) to grind welding slag off of a metal ring. While holding the grinder with his left hand improperly, the grinder became out of control striking the tip of his right thumb. Employee was wearing all required PPE.
