The South Portal Elevator was stopped because an employee inadvertently opened the door before the elevator stopped at its landing. They heard a beep from an inspector's multi-gas detector as the battery died and they thought it was the elevator beeping that it was ok to open the doors. This stopped the elevator and faulted the door switch. MSHA was notified.
