The Application of Irradiation to Phytosanitary Problems

This document sets forth a policy statement that shares positions and policies of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) concerning the use of irradiation as a treatment for plant pests of quarantine significance. In preparing this document, we have reviewed and evaluated pertinent and contemporary information concerning irradiation as a phytosanitary treatment or potential treatment. We have examined this information against the background of regulatory and operational parameters associated with APHIS, Plant Protection and Quarantine's (PPQ's) mission and authority. The objective of this effort has been to generate a reference document that describes policies, procedures, and regulations specifically related to irradiation as a phytosanitary treatment. This document is designed for review and comment.
