## Narrative
On November 13, 2015, my son, [XXX], was killed just a few miles west of Tijeras, New Mexico, when a semi-truck driver forced his Honda Civic off the road, causing his Civic to become pinned underneath the 2016 semitrailer built by Utility Trailer Manufacturing Company. [XXX] car was subsequently dragged for about 0.5 miles under the Utility semitrailer until his car caught fire. The autopsy confirmed he had no physical injuries from the crash; my son burned to death in his car that was trapped underneath the Utility semitrailer. [XXX] was killed driving to marching band practice at Manzano High School in Albuquerque. His death could have been prevented. Experts who reconstructed and analyzed the crash found that a side underride guard on the semitrailer would have saved Riley’s life. Utility Trailer Manufacturing Company was negligent because their newly-manufactured semitrailer lacked side underride guards. This case represents 1 tragic death; however, there are similarly hundreds of deaths and serious injuries annually from collisions with semitrailers lacking side underride guards, indicating that semitrailers without side underride guards contain a defect that presents an unreasonable risk to the public from a significant number of failures that is reasonably foreseeable.
