Narrative

On December 9, 2023, while driving my brand new 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid Touring HPD package on the highway during snowy conditions at less than 50 mph less than 8000 miles on the odometer after my first oil change the automatic emergency braking (AEB) system suddenly and unexpectedly engaged with no obstacle, vehicle, or pedestrian ahead, causing the vehicle to skid uncontrollably and slam into a concrete highway barrier. The car was towed from the scene, and I was hospitalized for injuries sustained in the high-speed impact. The AEB component or system malfunctioned by activating without cause; it was inspected by police at the scene and I contacted Honda’s safety team to conduct an investigation. This unintended braking put my safety at extreme risk by inducing sudden deceleration and loss of control on a slippery highway, which could have endangered following traffic as well. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a Honda dealer or independent service center since the vehicle was not repaired. Police inspected it at the crash scene and issued me a ticket for “driving too fast for conditions” despite my explanation of the sudden braking; no manufacturer inspection of the AEB occurred, though I contacted Honda’s safety team and they attributed it to not following the owner’s guidebook without further review.
