However, water temperatures in the\nocean and the Long Island Sound will remain mostly in the 50s.\n\nThe cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia and\nphysical incapacitation to anyone suddenly immersed in the water.\nWhen the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average\nsubmerged person could lose dexterity within minutes and be unable\nto accomplish simple tasks. Anyone going out on small boats,\ncanoes or kayaks should plan accordingly and use extreme caution\nto avoid this threat.\n\nSeveral things to consider...\n\n* Always wear a life jacket.\n\n* Dress for the water temperatures, not air temperatures. Wear cold\nwater protection, like a wetsuit or drysuit.\n\n* Carry an Emergency Position Indication Radio Device.\n\n* File a float plan with someone you trust.\n\n* Check the latest marine weather forecast, including water\ntemperatures at www.weather.gov/okx/marine before you go out on\nthe waters.\n\nYour ability to survive cold water immersion depends on your ability\nto stay afloat and stay warm until help arrives."}
