Fountaining episodes typically last less\nthan 12 hours but ash can remain in the air longer depending on\nwind and weather.\n\nIMPACTS...Varying levels of ash, Pele's hair, and other lightweight\ntephra may fall downwind of the eruption. Smaller particles can\ntravel farther from the eruption site and may affect communities\nat greater distances. Low level winds will carry any tephra to the\nwest or southwest of the summit. If the eruption is strong enough\nto loft tephra above the trade wind inversion, tephra may be\ncarried to the north or northeast.\n\n## Instructions\nIf you live downwind of the Kilauea summit, or plan to visit the\nsummit area, stay informed about current volcanic activity and\nweather conditions. Be prepared to take precautions if needed,\nsuch as disconnecting water catchment systems. Follow all guidance\nfrom the National Park Service and the County of Hawaii. Be aware\nthat road or park closures may occur.\n\nAvoid excessive exposure to ash which is an eye and respiratory\nirritant. Those with respiratory sensitivities should take extra\nprecaution to minimize exposure.\n\nThis statement will be issued daily and updated as needed."}
