Up to 1 foot of inundation is\npossible for sound-side flooding from Buxton\nsouthward/westward as strong N'rly winds remain in place\ntoday. For the High Surf Advisory, large breaking waves of 10\nto 15 feet in the surf zone. For the Beach Hazards Statement,\ndangerous rip currents, large breaking waves expected, and\nstrong longshore currents in the surf zone.\n\n* WHERE...Hatteras Island. Beach hazard statement for longshore\ncurrents is expected to be confined to beaches north of Cape\nHatteras.\n\n* WHEN...For the Coastal Flood Warning, until 11 AM EDT\nSaturday. For the High Surf Advisory, until 8 PM EDT Saturday.\nFor the Beach Hazards Statement, until 8 PM EDT this evening.\n\n* IMPACTS...Numerous roads may be closed. NC-12 remains closed\nfrom the Basnight Bridge to Rodanthe. Low lying property\nincluding homes, businesses, and some critical infrastructure\nwill be inundated. Some shoreline and dune erosion will occur.\nDangerous swimming and surfing conditions. Rip currents can\nsweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper\nwater. Dangerous shore break can throw a swimmer or surfer\nhead first into the bottom causing neck and back injuries.\nStrong longshore currents will create dangerous swimming\nconditions.\n\n* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The next high tide is around 7:15 PM. The\nmost likely time for strong rip currents to occur is a couple\nhours either side of low tide, which will occur around 1:10 PM\nFriday.\n\n## Instructions\nTake the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. If\ntravel is required, do not drive around barricades or through\nwater of unknown depth.\n\nInexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to\ndangerous surf conditions.\n\nLife-threatening rip currents. If caught in a rip current, remain\ncalm. Swim in a direction following the shoreline. If tired,\nfloat or tread water until out of the rip current. If unable to\nescape, face the shore and call or wave for help.\n\nShore break occurs when waves break directly on the beach. It is\nextremely important to protect your head and neck whenever you\nare in breaking waves by keeping your hands in front of you at\nall times.\n\nStrong longshore currents can sweep swimmers and surfers into rip\ncurrents, piers, jetties and other hazardous areas. In many\ncases, the longshore current is strong enough to prevent swimmers\nfrom being able to keep their feet on the bottom making it\ndifficult to return to shore."}
