The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 5 issued a Consent Agreement and Final Order (CAFO) to Archer Daniels Midland for violations of the National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) for Pharmaceutical Production. The alleged violations included the failure to test, monitor, maintain records of emissions of Hazardous Air Pollutants, including methanol, and submit reports required by the regulation. ADM has completed all the testing required, established all the proper monitoring parameters, has begun maintaining all the appropriate records, and submitted their full notification of compliance status report.
The agreement requires Archer Daniels Midland to pay a civil penalty of $325,000. ADM will also conduct two Supplementary Environmental Projects, including an equipment upgrade and an enhanced leak detection program, both of which will reduce methanol fugitive emissions.
