The EPA is extending by six additional months the deadline for taking final action on a petition submitted by the State of North Carolina under section 126 of the Clean Air Act (CAA). The petition requests that EPA make findings that certain sources located in 13 States are significantly contributing to fine particulate matter and/or 8-hour ozone nonattainment or maintenance problems in North Carolina. Under the CAA, EPA is authorized to grant this time extension if EPA determines that the extension is necessary, among other things, to meet the purposes of the CAA's rulemaking requirements. By this document, EPA is making that determination.
