Today's action revises the motor vehicle Inspection/ Maintenance (I/M) Program Requirements. This rule establishes the minimum requirements for inspecting vehicles equipped with on-board diagnostic systems as part of the inspections required in basic and enhanced Inspection/Maintenance programs. Inspection/Maintenance programs are an important part of EPA's overall program to decrease the emissions of harmful pollutants from motor vehicles and bring all areas in the United States into attainment with the goals of the Clean Air Act.
